This past Friday, police had to come between Christianists who were preaching on the corner of Castro and 18th and a group of angry locals. Here's an excerpt from a KTVU story-
In San Francisco's Castro District, people on both sides of the same-sex marriage controversy confronted each other on Friday night, as police tried to keep the peace. Proposition 8 passed in a close vote and eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry.
Members of the gay community said that almost every Friday night, a Christian group meets at the corner of Castro and 18th Streets. They try to convert gays and lesbians into a straight lifestyle. This Friday night, the message didn't go over well. Some gays and lesbians reacted by trying to chase the group out of the Castro."Their rights were respected," said Joe Schmitz, an opponent of Prop 8. "They got a chance to go ahead and pray on the sidewalk and I had the opportunity to express my freedom of speech which is telling them to get out of my neighborhood. "San Francisco Police officers in riot gear formed a line and escorted the religious group into a van to safely get them out of the area. Members of the gay community insisted that their reaction to the Christian group was spontaneous. "It was not an organized thing. We're tired of it. It's not religious. It's not a racial thing. It's about hate. We're trying to send a message across the world that we're standing up and we don't want this to go on anymore," said Adam Quintero.
Some reports have been coming in on right-wing blogs saying that the Christians were physically attacked. There was also the incident in Palm Springs last week that many Christianist blogs are reporting on.
I understand that we are angry and we must stand up for our civil rights, but we must remember that the only way to win this battle is through peaceful protest. If we take the moral high-ground, there is no way they can stop us. If we let this conflict devolve into violence, many won't be sympathetic with our cause. We can scream and yell, but let's refrain from physically touching any of those who want to deny us of our civil rights, regardless of what hateful bigots they might be. It will only undermine our cause and it's certainly not the press we need. Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi managed to effect great change through repeatedly telling their followers to be peaceful and creative in all their protest. Here's a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. about Thoreau's essay on civil disobedience-
During my early college days I read Thoreau's essay on civil disobedience for the first time. Fascinated by the idea of refusing to cooperate with an evil system, I was so deeply moved that I re-read the work several times. I became convinced then that non-cooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good. No other person has been more eloquent and passionate in getting this idea across than Henry David Thoreau. As a result of his writings and personal witness we are the heirs of a legacy of creative protest. It goes without saying that the teachings of Thoreau are alive today, indeed, they are more alive today than ever before. Whether expressed in a sit-in at lunch counters, a freedom ride into Mississippi, a peaceful protest in Albany, Georgia, a bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, it is an outgrowth of Thoreau's insistence that evil must be resisted and no moral man can patiently adjust to injustice.
So let's keep fighting, and protesting, and sitting in at Mormon temples. Just remember to avoid any physical contact with these Christianists who will use anything they can against us.

So-called ”Christians“ coming
So-called ”Christians“ coming into the Castro to ”convert“ gay people is not an act of free speech but an act of overt provocation, tantamount to the KKK showing up in their sheets in an African-American neighborhood. These bigots continue to attack and offend us in these not-so-subtle ways because they truly believe we are spineless sissies who will simply roll over and take it up the ass from them. Bravo to the brave brothers and sisters who drove them out!
I suggest we go on the offensive legally and start calling them on their bullshit that does not deserve the protection of freedom of religion. The preachers of hate, whether Mormon, Evangelical, Catholic, or otherwise, are ABUSING GAY KIDS in their midst every day. Those of us who grew up with such emotional and at times physical abuse in the name of religion can TESTIFY to the fact. Child abuse is a crime, and there is no statute of limitations on child-abuse prosecution, as far as I am aware. Therefore, I suggest we start sharing our stories of childhood abuse at the hands of these preachers of hate and the churches that support them and start PROSECUTING THE PREACHERS OF HATE for the CHILD ABUSERS that they are. These churches would have to spend millions to defend themselves, money they would no longer be able to use to deprive us of our civil rights. If they want to make this issue about protecting kids, we'll make it about protecting kids. FREEDOM OF RELIGION ENDS WHERE THE ABUSE OF GAY KIDS BEGINS.
In the 80s we had to Act-Up for our lives. It's time to Act-Now! for our rights.
I completely disagree. The
I completely disagree. The real test of the value free speech in this society is not how much we respect it for ourselves (thats easy isn't it?) but rather how much we protect it for those with whom we passionately disagree. The klan/black analogy to this discussion is absolutely silly and irrelevant. Christians have the right to go into any neighborhood they want to try to "convert" whom ever they want, just like gays have the right to appear in front of Morman Churches to protest their support for Prop 8. If you don't like it, just ignore them. But lets spare all the self righteous sanctimony and respect the protections afforded by constitution for everyone, even those whom we don't like.
I ENTIRELY AGREE! No more
I ENTIRELY AGREE! No more Mr. Nice Gay. The time of rolling over and being "nice" has come and gone. It has gotten us entirely nowhere. Their so-called free speech is nothing more than lies and distortions. It's the milquetoasts and apologists like Billy who give these hatemongers every excuse to continue to spout their hateful and vile lifestyles.
You should go back and read
You should go back and read the US Constitution and the rights it guarantees to all Americans for free speech, not just knee jerk leftists like you. If you are advocating forcibly interfering with other people's right to freedom of expression, be sure to have a friend handy when the time comes, who can bail you out of jail.
Quite frankly I think until
Quite frankly I think until gay men and women stop being so NICE to those who hate them, little will be accomplished. We have no need to "respect" christianity, for example. Does anyone know of a christian sect that has expunged hate speech from the "bible"?
I came out late in life, having decided to end my political career as a state legislator. I had determined to try to be a voice for gay rights, and found myself in one of those enless meetings after the meeting at an all night eatery. A loud nasty patron started making LOUD comments about the fags at the round corner table. Being the old Dawg that I am, I went over to ask him to be quiet and mind his own business. Did the guys from the local Pride Committee back me up. HELL NO. They simpered and clucked and talked about "not getting down to their level". Since then, not ONE FUCKING THING has been accomplished concerning gay rights in WV, in fact, things legally are worse for gay men and women, we don't even have a hate crimes bill including gays.
Quite frankly, Im glad I smacked the shit out of that asshole, even if I did have to do it alone.
At the next meeting of the Pride Committe I was asked to resign from its board, ME who had spent many terms as a member of the state legislature, had a legal background, and a strong following of decent minded men and women who had voted for me repeatedly. I was replaced by a moron without a high school education. He was cute though.
